Earlier this year, Intel acknowledged stability issues in its 13th and 14th-generation processors, which were traced to high voltage and frequency settings that caused overheating and performance degradation. These problems were particularly prevalent on 600 and 700 series chipset motherboards, where overclocking and underclocking settings were adjusted in the BIOS. Despite BIOS updates from motherboard manufacturers, some users continued to experience these issues. Intel's investigation revealed that a microcode algorithm was causing the CPUs to request incorrect voltage levels, leading to system crashes.

In response, Intel has announced plans to release a microcode patch in mid-August 2024 and has urged affected users to provide feedback to customer support. To further address user concerns, Intel recently issued a statement to Tom's Hardware, reaffirming its commitment to supporting customers impacted by these stability issues. The company is offering a two-year extended warranty for its 13th and 14th-generation processors, providing additional support and reassurance. Intel has advised that customers who purchased systems from OEMs or system integrators should contact their respective support services, while those who bought boxed CPUs should reach out directly to Intel Customer Support.
Intel is also working on methods to better identify affected processors within user systems and will provide additional guidance as needed. The company apologized for delays in communication, acknowledged the challenges in diagnosing and resolving the issue. Despite these ongoing stability concerns, sales of Intel's 13th and 14th-generation processors reported mainly continue without interference.
This warranty extension is a positive step, especially given a recent report indicating that the return rate for Intel's 13th-generation CPUs in Europe is up to four times higher than that of the previous generation. Intel's 14th-generation processors are also estimated to have a higher return rate, while AMD processors in Europe have maintained a stable return rate of around 1% since 2020.
