Larian Studios would have considered developing a Fallout game if it had not obtained the license for Baldur's Gate 3, a senior company official revealed. While Fallout was not the only intellectual property the developer was interested in pursuing, all backup plans ultimately proved unnecessary.
The Belgium-based developer first sought the Baldur's Gate license around 2014, following the release of Divinity: Original Sin. Wizards of the Coast initially declined, citing Larian's lack of experience, as previously noted by Larian CEO Swen Vincke. The studio then focused on Divinity: Original Sin 2, whose impressive pre-release footage eventually convinced Wizards of the Coast to offer the Baldur's Gate license. Larian responded positively and began pre-production on Baldur's Gate 3 in late 2016.

Although everything worked out, Larian was not counting on this outcome and had already considered alternative IPs to elevate its industry status. In a recent interview with Edge (via GamesRadar), Vincke identified two RPG franchises that Larian saw as worthwhile pursuits: Fallout and Ultima.
"It would have been Ultima, it would have been Fallout, it would have been Baldur's Gate; there was not a lot to choose from," Vincke recalled. Although Larian has a history of creating original IPs, the studio viewed licensing as a promising opportunity to leverage its RPG expertise and accelerate its growth.
This strategy proved successful, as Baldur's Gate 3 became the first game in history to win five major Game of the Year (GOTY) awards and sold over 15 million copies. The Baldur's Gate license significantly elevated Larian, establishing it as a revered name in the industry.
As for the backup plans, neither the Fallout nor Ultima licenses were pursued by the studio. Larian is now focused on its own properties, working on two new games based on original IPs. These unnamed projects are still in pre-production and are not expected to be released for several years.
